Punctuation out of quotes
In addition to using "singular-they", I also put my commas and other punctuation outside of quotes when it makes sense. For example:
He frequently used the word "mugwump".
He has T-shirts that say "Free Tibet", "Just Do it", and "No Fear".
It's non-standard, but to me it makes more sense than:
He frequently used the word "mugwump."
He has T-shirts that say "Free Tibet," "Just Do it," and "No Fear."
These seem wrong to me because the punctuation is not part of the quoted terms. I think it's the programmer in me. You'll get over it.
For direct quotes that end in a punctuation mark, I follow the normal rules.
