Two things:

Just because something is "mainstream" doesn't mean it's correct.
Just because something is not "mainstream" doesn't mean it's correct.

Often, people who understand the first have problems with the second…

Close. Mostly I'm saying that just because you can't trust "the experts" doesn't mean you should trust the "non-experts" :)
